I think it's been almost a year since I started working here.
Art Downing, owner of A.D. EdgeWorks in Santa Rosa has been sharpening for 10+ years around Sonoma County, San Rafael, and San Fransisco. Farmers Markets, restaurants, salons...Anywhere that needs a refined edge!
I met him at the farmers market in Sebastopol and watched him work while I bothered him with questions and comments about his craft. I came back to the next market and he asked if I wanted to have an apprenticeship. (What kind of cook/knife enthusiast would say "no" to that?)
Since then, I've enjoyed learning about this unique trade. He's become more than a boss, but also a mentor. His passion for his craft and meticulous practice are a great influence.
When he's not grinding away you may find him in his wood shop, or spending time with his grandchildren, or perhaps watching YouTube videos on how to make things.
"Since my grandfather showed me how to whet my pen knife about 50 years ago, I have compulsively sharpened knives and tools whenever confronted by a dull edge. Dinner hosts have left me to make a salad and returned to find me ransacking their kitchen searching for something to use as a hone. I have used the back of a plate or bowl to help a tired knife cope with a tough tomato." - Art Downing
