As much as I would love to deny this, the sad feeling I get when I look at other millennials around me comes from knowing that writing is not as appreciated as it once was. It's not just millennials, actually. Many people have adopted a generalization of writing and reading, claiming that it's "silly and uninteresting." Poetry being a prominent avoidance among many people I meet.
We are growing a taste for quick satisfaction. Easy ways to entertain, escape, and it's creating a pseudo-intellectual movement. We are "in-the-know," but are we truly learning and exploring?
It used to be that we would either go outside or read. Now we are immersed in technology. You don't need to take the time to read or write to learn about someone's mind and deepest feelings anymore. Now we have this trend of substandard articles such as "10 ways to love," with brief descriptions and cookie-cutter stock images that will imprint an impression of artificial reality that you'll set your entire life standards to because it'll generalize the subject matter.
Writing is being stamped out because of the growth of passive approach by readers. It is also mocked and laughed at because of the common vulnerability it displays from an individual. Along with the art of being a writer, also comes the small handful active readers who take the time to decipher and attempt to connect through comprehension.
Writing is crucial because it comes from within YOU. It is created from within another Human being. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or even a simple statement…When you put in the time and effort you're speaking and asking for yourself. Creating your own answers and making connections. You're also exercising your cognitive function and making your brain very happy, and quite possibly attracting a more intellectual social circle.
If you are not a writer and have taken the time to read this I challenge you to sit down for ten minutes and write something. Anything. Express yourself. You never know if you may have a knack for it.
